Bayou

November, 2010

We danced in the enchanted forest, children of pubescent bodies, children once again

danced to the sound of Kongo drums lifted from the shores of New Orleans, underneath the giant oaks and the drip of a primordial mist

sequined with rainbow-laced cobwebs catching the morning rays, where macaws screamed in the canopies of the trees

and we danced in the swamps haunted by the ghosts of slaves still picking that strange fruit

whose sap perfumed the air with an amber resin smell that made you want to swoon

with remembrance of pain, humiliation, anguish

Our feet made the ground shake and the drums beat to the purple morning's glory

We children of those swaying bodies, trumpeted the news of awakening.
